Humans have communicated since the beginning of time. Before technology, word of mouth was the main, and sometimes only, form of communication. Imagine if we humans no longer had that capability. Unfortunately, some people live their everyday lives without the ability to speak; those people have a speech, or voice, disorder.
The term voice disorder refers to conditions where a person struggles to communicate by mouth. Speech impairments, however, are useful in identifying mental retardation, such as autism, cerebral palsy, and hearing impairments, as well as possible defections in growth and development.
There is no way to prevent a speech disorder from developing. Often times, children suffering with mental retardation and hearing loss develop speech disorders. Usually, voice disorders cannot be fully treated, but with the help of speech therapists, voice disorders can become less noticeable. It is best if said disorders are caught early in one's life so that therapy can begin as soon as possible. Contact a doctor when you start witnessing signs of a possible voice disorder. A doctor is able to refer your child to a speech therapist.
